Diamonds cover the floor
Titling your head they turn into checkerboard spots
Falling from the ceiling, black and red circular tiles plop.
They begin to play! Move after move, red wins.
A dog pile commences, both teams end up laughting and encouraging one another.
The pieces begin to stand, transforming into children.
If only, if only teens could play this nice, and adults
If only, if only kids could get along without teasing each other
The checkerboard will sit and wait for the next round
Patient and excited about what is to come
If teenagers come to play, the competition will get fierce
If adults come to play, the game will be put on hold several times,
They have their email and cell phone breaks
But if the children return, joy and happiness will overtake the cottage!
And so the checkerboard waits in the cottage,
patiently...
